Rizq literally means provisions, things which are eaten, drunk and get benefited. It terminologically means everything God Almighty gives to the living creatures as eating, drinking and benefiting. According to this definition, the rızq can be either halâl (lawful) or harâm (unlawful).
The accepted basic principles about Rızq are:
1- The creator and provider of rızq is only Allah. It has been stated in the Qur’an that: ''There is no animal on the earth but on Allah is the sustenance of it...'' {Hûd, 11/6}. Another verse states that Allah makes ample and straitens the means of substance for He pleases. {Shûrâ, 42/12)
A servant strives by minding Allah's natural laws that prevailing in the universe, and grasps the reasons and makes choices in order to earn the sustenance. Allah creates his sustenance in accordance with his choice and strife. Being Allah the only source of sustenance should not be a reason for laziness and misconception of tawakkul.
2- The unlawful {harâm} gain is also within the sustenance context. However Allah has no consent for the servant to earn the unlawful sustenance. By stating in the Qur’an as: ''Therefore eat of what Allah has given you, lawful and good ones, and give thanks for Allah's favour if only to Him you serve'' {Nahl, 16/114), eating halâl has been commanded the harâm has been prohibited.
3- Everybody eats his own sustenance. Nobody eats someone else’s sustenance. |
