The official opening of Djibouti Abdülhamid Han II Mosque and Complex built by Türkiye Diyanet Foundation was held with the attendance of the President of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) Mustafa Şentop and President of Religious Affairs Prof. Dr. Ali Erbaş

The official opening of Djibouti Abdülhamid Han II Mosque and Complex built by Türkiye Diyanet Foundation (TDV) was held in a ceremony with the attendance of the President of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) Mustafa Şentop and President of Religious Affairs Prof. Dr. Ali Erbaş.

Giving a speech in the opening of the mosque whose foundation was laid 4 years ago, the President of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) Mustafa Şentop wished for Djibouti Abdülhamid Han II Mosque and Complex to be beneficent to the people of Djibouti.  

Stating that the mosque was built in the Ottoman architecture style, Şentop said, “The ornament of the mosques is the community. If we may fill here with the community at all prayer times of the day, we will ornament here in the actual meaning.”

Emphasizing that Djibouti Abdülhamid Han II Mosque and Complex is a solid impression of the fact that the relations between Turkey and Djibouti are not just so-called, Şentop continued as follows:

"We are all aware about the friendship between the President of Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the President of Republic of Djibouti İsmail Ömer Guelleh. During a meeting between them, the decision regarding the mosque was taken and the construction of the mosque have been completed in a short time. Even though we are late for the opening of the mosque, we thank both the President of Republic of Turkey and Djibouti. This idea is belong to them. And to be able to materialize this idea was possible thanks to their efforts and commitments. May Allah (swt) to be pleased by them.”

Delivering that the mosque was built by Türkiye Diyanet Foundation (TDV), Şentop thanked to the President of Religious Affairs Prof. Dr. Ali Erbaş and all those who made efforts in the construction and planning of the mosque.

"A present from Turkey to the people of Djibouti”

Djibouti Minister of Foundations and Religious Affairs Mümin Hasan Barreh stated that Djibouti Abdülhamid Han II Mosque and Complex is a present from Turkey to the people of Djibouti.  

Following the speeches, the President of Religious Affairs Erbaş made duas. After the duas, the opening ribbon of the mosque was cut.

The President Erbaş also delivered a khutbah to the Muslims in Djibouti in Djibouti Abdülhamid Han II Mosque and Complex and established the Friday prayer. 

The opening of the mosque was attended by the President of National Assembly of Djibouti Muhammed Ali Hamed, Prime Minister Abdulkader Kamil Mohamed, Djibouti Minister of Foundations and Religious Affairs Barreh and Minister of National Education Mustafa Muhammet Mahmut, Ambassador of Turkey in Djibouti Salim Levent Şahinkaya, congressmen from Turkey and the people of Djibouti.

The biggest mosque in Djibouti

In the mosque which was built following the wishes of the President of Republic of Djibouti İsmail Ömer Guelleh as “I wish to see a mosque with the signs of the Ottoman architecture in my country and to hear adhans recited in the way of Istanbul in the skies” during the Djibouti visit of the President of Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in 2015, 6 thousand believers will be able to worship at the same time.

The Mosque and Complex was constructed in a field of 13 thousand square meter by embanking the sea in the province of Salines Ouest where the Palace of the Presidency is also placed in the capital city Djibouti which is an important seaport.

For the construction of the mosque and the complex which carries the character of being and important and the biggest symbolic architectural work of the region with the Ottoman architectural style and the sense of art, a major amount of the materials was sent from Turkey. The mosque whose cupola is 27 meters in height and 20 meters diameter has two minarets with two minaret balconies and 46 meters in length.

Ornamented with the most unique examples of the art of calligraphy

In the mosque which is ornamented with the most unique examples of the Ottoman art of calligraphy in the cupola and on the walls, a modest style was preferred with the purpose of delivering the regional features. The chandeliers of the main cupola and the half-cupola were designed with the characters of classic Ottoman art of illumination.  

In the sanctuary and upper story grounds of the mosque whose woodwork and decoration were produced in Turkey with the characters of the Traditional Turkish-Islamic arts, odorless wool felt was laid out considering the hot climate conditions.
