The President of Religious Affairs Prof. Dr. Ali Erbaş delivered a speech at the Introductory Program of Activities in Ramadan 2021 that was held in the Conference Hall of the Turkiye Diyanet Foundation.
Stating that after the first tarawih prayer that would be established on April 12, Monday, we would enter the month of Ramadan with the fast that would be observed on April 13, Tuesday, the President of Religious Affairs Erbaş said that the month of Ramadan reminded the believers their goal of creation and their responsibilities.
The President Erbaş expressed that the month of Ramadan was a distinguished gift by the Almighty Allah (swt) and recorded that Ramadan was an exceptional school that educated people with humanly values and moral merits.
Reminding that they were bringing one of the life-giving principles of Islam into agenda every year in the month of Ramadan, the President Erbaş, “We have designated the theme of the month of Ramadan this year as “Ramadan: The Month of Healing”. Ramadan, which has a place in the believing hearts as the sultan of eleven months, is a source of healing for our material and moral illnesses wholly and is a month of healing.”
The President Erbaş uttered that they chose this theme to remind the fact that the month of Ramadan was a month of healing with its every aspects and continued his words as follows:
“Ramadan is a month of healing when we save our souls from slavery by migrating from every kind of sin and faults and therefore, we find peace, and when we hope to be saved from illnesses such as disdain and arrogance admitting our powerless selves by presenting our status to the Almighty Allah (swt). Ramadan is a month of healing when we intend to treat our illness of stinginess and selfishness by being a cure to troubles of the poor, orphan, sick and those in need with our donations and benevolences in line with the warning of our Lord as “By no means shall ye attain righteousness unless ye give (freely) of that which ye love.” For all their intents and purposes, all worships such as our prayers, zakats, fasts, duas, muqabalahs, khatums and sadaqahs are blessings that strengthen us spiritually, purify our hearts, boot our hopes and give us strength to overcome the difficulties. On one hand, our beloved Prophet (saw) stated that fasting was a training of will against desire and ambitions by saying “Fasting is the half of patience” and on the other hand, it was good health for our bodies and an occasion of moral purification for our souls with his hadith al-sharif as “Zakat is for everything and the zakat for the body is the fasting.”
“We should make plans so that our children shall experience the beauties of Ramadan more”
Referring that we met this month of Ramadan, too, in the conditions of the epidemic that had been continuing for over one year, the President Erbaş talked as, “We should consider this period which we shall be with our families more as an opportunity to strengthen our family bonds. We should care more to experience the moral beauties of Ramadan at homes together with our family members. We should make use of the opportunity in the best way by worshipping, reading Qur’an and talking together with our families, and performing the iftar and sahur together. Particularly, we should make plans so that our children shall experience the excitement and beauties of Ramadan more.”

In this month when we value most sharing and shukr, we shall try to be the happiness of the poor and sick and shall execute activities of goodness in our country and the places where needed. We shall join the duas that are made sincerely by our brothers. Our Turkiye Diyanet Foundation gives education support to over 10 thousand students in 14 countries abroad with 25 education projects, over 5 thousand students who came to our country from abroad and thousands of students domestically. Those students whom we give educational supports become the willing ambassadors of Turkey in their own countries. And they shall resume so in the future as well, Insha Allah. They talk about the generosity of our country in their own countries. We do not just deliver aid, or meats of sacrifices to places where we visit abroad, we take meats of sacrifice and aid for Ramadan, but our national flag and the generosity of our people. And the Turkiye Diyanet Foundation is very significant for this.”

Drawing the attention to the fact that important duties fell upon the media outlets and the members of media in the month of Ramadan as well, the President Erbaş continued his words as follows:
“I kindly request those who write, speak and execute programs related to our supreme religion, Islam, or the worships especially fasting in the media and the digital platforms to abide the authentic information. I kindly request them act with the consciousness of responsibility and avoid from information that is wrong, weak and without a reliable origin. I especially request them not to occupy the minds of our nation with unnecessary subjects and discussions and avoid any action and behaviors that shall lead to sedition and division. I would like to state clearly that our muftiates and officials especially the High Board of Religious Affairs are ready as always to guide, contribute and support all person, institution and organizations intending to make broadcastings and activities related to our religion and values. As long as we aim and strive to execute good works with good intentions. I kindly and especially request our glorious nation not to give credit to contents and discourses based on dispute, conflict, sedition and division with no clear origin in the visual media, social media and the digital platforms.”
“We decided that it would be more suitable to establish the tarawih prayers at homes”
Sharing the decision that was taken related to the tarawih prayers being established in mosques, the President Erbaş continued his words as follows:
“Unfortunately, the danger of epidemic that we have been experiencing is still continuing. We as humanity could not get rid of this epidemic. The number of cases and deaths is continuing to increase. Therefore, as the result of multiple evaluations that we have executed and the multiple consultations that we have executed with the authorized officials of our state especially the Ministry of Health, we decided that it would be more suitable to establish the tarawih prayers at homes not in mosques at the current conditions. Of course, it was our wish to be able to establish tarawih prayers in mosques. It was to live that enjoyment together with our family, with our children in mosques. However, due to the reasons such as epidemic danger, the tarawih prayer requiring people to be in a closed place for a long time and the existence of cases without symptoms, we shall establish tarawih prayers at homes. Of course, it is so upsetting for me to make such an announcement, but health is of a great significance. And we are aware of the fact that according to our supreme religion, Islam, the human health is prioritized. It is a great sin to danger the health of a single person by acting careless and without caution.”
Underlining that the tarawih prayer, which is a worship special to Ramadan, could be established in community at homes, the President Erbaş evaluated as “If we cannot establish with community, let us establish individually. In this way, we shall create a very beautiful place of worship at homes in these epidemic conditions. Insha Allah, we shall try to eliminate as much as possible the sorrow of not being able to meet in mosques by performing this very beautiful worship together with our families and children at our homes.”
The President Erbaş recorded that if an opportunity to establish prayers in mosques arose during this process according to the course of the epidemic, they would take a decision accordingly and share with the public.
“Can we get vaccinated while fasting?”
Stating that they got questions as “Can we get vaccinated while fasting?” from the citizens, the President Erbaş used expressions as, “As it was stated by the High Board of Religious Affairs, there is no objection to get vaccinated while fasting and this situation does not severe the fasting.”
The President Erbaş finalized his words with the following request: “Here I request the Almighty Allah (swt) let the month of Ramadan bring peace to our hearts, abundance to our houses and blessings to our family, country and the Islamic World and contribute to the search for the true path and tranquility of the humanity.”
