The President of Religious Affairs Prof. Dr. Ali Erbaş attended “the 17th Islamıc Forum” which was held online by Spiritual Directorate of Muslims of Russia and Russian Council of Muftis.

Giving a speech at the Forum with the subject of “From Ecological Sermon to Ecological Thinking: Finding the Best Way to Speak”, the President of Religious Affairs Erbaş extended his gratitude to the Chairman of Spiritual Directorate of Muslim of Russian and Russian Council of Muftis Rawil Gaynetdin for organizing the program and conveyed the greetings of the people of Türkiye.

Stating that the world is the common home of all the people, the President Erbaş said that the people were responsible for the earth that they live on.

Pointing out that humankind is making the world that they live for centuries unlivable with their own hands, the President Erbaş said “Our natural sources are rapidly declining and some type of animals and trees are becoming extinct due to what people did or are doing in the environment we live in. Pollution in the atmosphere are increasing day after day. There are serious problems regarding water resources due to the fact that they are used recklessly in the world that we live in. As a result of all these, humanity is faced with the change of seasons and global warming. Consequently, starvation and drought are knocking our doors. This is very sorrowful situation for us.”

Reminding “do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction” command in Qur’an, the President Erbaş talked as “This holy command gives us an important message in this aspect. If the humankind does not give up this greedy approach and regulate his relationship with the environment in the axis of a reasonable and restrained balance, he will encounter with many problems in micro and macro plans.”

“Ulama should tell the people about environmental ethics and lead them in terms of environmental awareness”

Underlining that ethical and legal responsibilities that social and ecological environment imposed on the believers are the same, President Erbaş said, “In this respect, we should consider the new problems arising from major changes and transformations in our social life with Islamic ethics and develop behavioral models accordingly. Especially at the point of solving the problems experienced, it has become very important for the ulama to explain environmental ethics to people and to lead the way in environmental awareness.”

“Our environment was entrusted to the people by the Almighty Allah (swt)”

“In accordance with the universal principles of Islam, we should discuss the relationship between people and environment in the context of responsibility, trust, good morals and righteous deed.” And continued as follows:

“Our environment has been entrusted to the people with the command of Qur’an by the Almighty Allah (swt). Receiving this trust, the humankind should establish a relationship model with a sense of responsibility towards all living things and the environment. Also, the hadith “There is none amongst the Muslims who plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, but is regarded as a charitable gift for him.” reveals the relationship of responsibility and trust with righteous deeds. Because it is a fact that people’s relationship with the environment is a duty of servitude for which they will be questioned in the hereafter. When this matter is ignored, it is inevitable that environmental crises, global subversion and waste will drag the world that we live in into total chaos and disorder.”

“For the living, environment means ‘life”

Emphasizing that wastage is horribly increased as a consequence of the fact that people’s relations with each other and with the environment are not established on a healthy basis, the President Erbaş made evaluations as “Wasted things damage humankind in many areas and cause the depletion of many resources.”

Underlining that humankind who cannot establish a friendly and merciful relationship with his environment is ruining himself, the President Erbaş talked as “If it goes on like this, there will be a tired, worn and harder world left to our children. This is a great sin. Because for the living, environment means ‘life’. Where there is no life, there can be no people. We must tell our children and all humankind about the life of our beloved Prophet (saw) and his attitude towards nature and animals.”

“Using the energy sources correctly is the respect for the right of generations to come”

Expressing that while we are benefitting from the nature for the needs of people, we also have to respect the right of the environment that we used, the President Erbaş said, “Giving water to the tree is to pay regard to the right of the tree. Not throwing toxic waste into the waters is respect the right of water. Using the energy sources correctly is the respect for the right of generations to come. This is because the universe itself, which was created according to an infallible measure, from the flawless way in which migratory birds find their way to the cycle of the seasons, is one of the clearest proofs of Allah’s existence. We know that every created particle glorifies the Almighty Allah (swt).

“We are conducting activities regarding Environmental Ethics Project”

Pointing out the importance of the environmental principles of Islam, President Erbaş concluded his words as follows:

“Here I regret to say that when the environmental issued are discussed, the principles established by Islam for environmental ethics are not on the agenda in international platforms. Therefore, with this conference and similar conferences and international studies, we have to put forward the environmental ethics of Islam more strongly. As the Presidency of Religious Affairs, we are trying to conduct serious activities regarding “Environment Ethics Project” with the theme “Zero Waste, Zero Squander”. I would like to state that we are ready to cooperate with you in every matter and to provide any kind of support in order to increase awareness on this issue.”
