President of Religious Affairs Prof. Dr. Ali Erbaş met with national media executives in İstanbul.

In his speech at the meeting, President of Religious Affairs Erbaş noted that the world is undergoing profound changes and transformations in tandem with the advancement of science and technology. He noted that communication and interaction opportunities are expanding at an unprecedented rate, while individual and social opportunities are expanding at a rate never seen before.

Noting that, despite these advancements, possibilities, and wealth, the great majority of the world's population now battles for survival against famine, poverty, terrorism, war, and pandemic, President Erbaş continued his words as follows:

"Unfortunately, humanity is trapped today between wasting, greed, and laziness on the one hand, and famine, poverty, suffering, and societal issues on the other. Due to terrorism, migration, widespread illnesses, and global injustices, human beings are destined to a harsh and dismal existence marked by despair and hopelessness. This situation, which creates the conditions for major breakdowns in global and psychological social ties, is one of the primary causes of material and moral catastrophes.

To my mind, there is a crisis of "ethics and civilization" based on "meaning and values" in the context of the aforementioned social, political, economic, and environmental challenges that surround our planet. Regrettably, the spiritual dimension of the human person and the transcendental extent of existence have been overlooked in the current period's life idea. As a result of the deviations in ethical standards, preserving human qualities has grown more challenging."

President Erbaş noted that religion and spirituality are marginalized and maltreated today, and that Muslim societies' faith and value judgments have been seriously harmed as a result. "We see that chaos, turmoil, and meaningless conflicts have largely displaced values such as justice, compassion, trust, peace, and moderation, which are central concepts of Islam. Unfortunately, all of the aforementioned crises are wreaking havoc on the minds and hearts of young people, weakening society's calm and hope for the future."

President Erbaş emphasized the importance of communicating Islam's truths to the people on the basis of existence, knowledge, purpose, and ethics, stating that "the depressions to which human beings are subjected will find peace only through the universal values of Islam, which promise tranquillity and security to the earth. There are other verses in the Holy Qur'an that demonstrate this and invite people to this knowledge. I'd like to share at least one of them with you; the Almighty Allah (swt) says: "O believers! Enter into Islam wholeheartedly and do not follow Satan’s footsteps. Surely he is your sworn enemy.Enter Islam wholeheartedly; and do not follow in the footsteps of the wicked one, for he is an acknowledged adversary of yours." 'Silm' is a term that refers to peace. It is also the source of the word Islam. This was the stated objective of all prophets. Inviting the communities to which they have been assigned to enjoyment, quiet, peace, and goodwill, and banning them from wickedness. Additionally, as prophetic heirs, we assert that our most beneficial job is to summon the good, command the good, and prohibit evil."

Underlining that attitudes and behaviours of the individuals and societies are influenced by religion, President Erbaş used the following expressions, “For this reason, the matter of society-religion, religion-politics and religion-state has always preserved its actuality throughout the history. And it will continue to preserve it. Since we know that there has never been a society in the world that is completely isolated from religion. We sometimes see that societies which are deemed as being distant from religion also believe in some things.”

Stating that every country and society determines a set of legal regulations within the context of their own facts and in this context, Türkiye also established the Presidency of Religious Affairs, President Erbaş continued his word as below:

“In our Constitution, the law related to our Presidency is as follows: “To enlighten the society about the religion.” It does not include just a part of the society, but each individual. Our Constitution has authorized the Presidency of Religious Affairs in this matter, namely enlightening the society about the religion with true knowledge. What is the source of true knowledge? It is the Holy Qur’an and Sunnah of our beloved Prophet (saw). Enlightening the society with this true knowledge and keeping it away from superstitions and extremism; the Presidency of Religious Affairs has never deviated from this principle. Our presidency has tried to perform its constitutional duties which have been given by the law, particularly religious service, religious education and publishing activities in the best manner from its establishment until today.

As a matter of fact, today it carefully performs the responsibility which it has undertaken not only in the borders of our country but also in the countries where our citizens and kindred people live. Our presidency, as it stands, has a structure that constitutes an example for the Islamic countries in a way. We are going to different countries. We hold meetings and when we tell them about our religious education and religious services in Türkiye, they listen admiringly. When we tell them about Organization of Religious Affairs, each of them understands how organized, disciplined it is and what a great opportunity it is for enlightening the society about religion.”

Mentioning that he have visited 34 provinces up until now, President Erbaş talked as “I stay two days in each province that I go to. We have made large scaled discussions from University to non-governmental organizations. We have made discussions with the administrators and non-governmental organizations of these cities by asking the following questions: “How can we bring religious services to this city in the best manner, how can we take care of our children? How can we support our children without relinquishing them to other groups, especially FETÖ and PKK? We have visited the entire East and Southern East.”

“The Presidency of Religious Affairs is an institution outside of any kind of political opinion”

Underlining that the Presidency of Religious Affairs is a constitutional institution outside of any kind of political opinion, ideology and daily discussion, President Erbaş talked as below:

“By the force of this, our Presidency will continue to express the truth and provide services within this direction with an understanding which surrounds all layers of the society for survival of our state and nation and tranquillity and soundness of our people. In spite of all these sensitivities of our Presidency, we unfortunately witness that some groups are trying to create negative perceptions regarding our institution and members from time to time. This is not a situation of today. Unfortunately, one of the most discussed issues in the media throughout the last century is religion and religious issues. And unfortunately, it is also made very irregularly with superficial and false information, mostly in a shallow ideological level and with prejudice.

This situation makes irrecoverable wounds in the consciousness of new generations and damages the perceptions of religion-value and civilization. When you spread an incorrect information, the youth and new generations take this information as truth and from there, a prejudice is formed in their minds; consequently, this does not only affect the targeted institution but also millions of people related to that institution.

In this context, the presence of our press and media executives is of vital importance. Since true information and true news have an important place for social unity-solidarity and sustainable tranquillity. Its importance is increasing.”

“The news not reflecting the reality give rise to intellectual separations between people”

Indicating that the perception created by information pollution and new not reflecting the reality give rise to intellectual separation and social breaks, President Erbaş said “This situation brings a trust issue with it at the same time. Therefore, we are obliged to be on alert against activities that intend to separate our society and discourses that conceal the fundamental structure of the religion through incorrect information about religion.”

“It is necessary to act more responsibly in the news related to religion and religious issues.”

Expressing that it is necessary to act more responsibly in the news related to religion and religious issues, President Erbaş talked as “I believe that our media groups should subject the editors and reporters that they employ in this field to a special training. It has great importance that anybody who makes news and comments in the field of religion and religious issues should have a grasp of religious literature at least in minimum level. I would like you to know that we, as institution, are open and ready to all kinds of support, communication and share of information in this matter.”

“Comparison of medieval age cannot be accepted”

After his speech, President of Religious Affairs Erbaş answered the questions of journalists about the current issues.

In reply to the question about CHP Group Deputy Chairman Özgür Özel’s comparison of “Medieval Age mentality” for pre-school Qur’an courses of Presidency of Religious Affairs, President Erbaş talked as below:

“Political persons sometimes give speeches in line with their own understanding, I think that this speech is an unfortunate speech and our Qur’an courses were compared with medieval age. There was a dark mentality in the medieval age and it is not related to Islam civilization. It is completely defined by the west. While the scientific developments were reaching the peak in Islamic world, there was a great medieval darkness in the west at that moment. Therefore, comparing the religious education of children with medieval age mentality cannot be accepted. Our nation has already shown a great response, and we have also shown a response with various occasions. Namely, I would wish that no one disturb our nation with this kind of comments.”

In addition to media representatives, General Director of Religious Publications Doç. Dr. Fatih Kurt and Provincial Mufti of İstanbul Prof. Dr. Safi Arpaguş also attended the meeting.
