Eyyüp Sabri Hayırlıoglu was born in Konya in 1886.He went to primary school in Konya. He became a hafiz at a young age. He took lessons from the then religious scholars Sivaslı Ali Kemali and Yalvaçlı Hacı Ömer Efendi. Then he attended the department of law at Dar’ül-Fünun (Ottoman University) in Konya. He graduated top of his class.He got madrasa’s (Muslim Theological School) consent and was considered higher education graduate in terms of his profession. After working as assistant mudarris (a teacher who gave lessons in mosques during the Ottoman period) in Istanbul and public prosecutor (müddei umumî) in Uşak, he came to Istanbul and started working as a lawyer. He won a seat in the Turkish Grand National Assembly as a second term member of parliament for Konya. He made pro-Republic speeches in the National Assembly. He proposed that the proclamation of the Republic and Atatürk’s election as President should be announced to the nation by firing a 101-gun salute. Then he left his parliamentary position and returned to Konya where he started working as a lawyer once again. He engaged in trade for some time. He was appointed the President of Religious Affairs on 17.04.1951.He retired on 10.06.1960 after remaining in office for nine years. He passed away in Ankara on October 8 1960.
